CIPS were tasked with a very awkward engine decommission and removal last year when a customer phoned up and asked us if we were interested in buying a Cummins 1710 Water Pump from a redundant Gas Works.
Decommissioning it was straightforward. The only problem was it was impossible to remove the genset and water pump without an overhead crane. The set had been redundant for about 10 years and the only reason it was still there was that nobody wanted to take the job on, but CIPS like a challenge.
There actually was an overhead crane onsite, but the power to the building had been disconnected for over 10 years. CIPS connected a generator, and after crossing our fingers and turning it on we got power and the crane worked.
The engine had to be raised up 25 feet to get it out of the access hole. It then had to be skated out to the car park to be loaded onto the transport. It was a challenge, but the genset was decommissioned, removed and transported offsite. CIPS then restored the genset to full working order and put it up for sale so that it would be back in commission.
